The World Leader in On-Demand Internet Television signs with Blomeley TransMedia for content development and delivery.
Akimbo is one of the first video on demand systems in the world, launched by the inventors of ReplayTV (now part of DirectTV) in 2004. The system allows subscribers to download television shows, movies, and other video to a set-top box on demand. Akimbo also released a software version of its on-demand system that ran on any computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. The software version was compatible with media center extenders such as the Xbox and Xbox 360.
NOTE TO READER FYI: Blomeley ceased to do business with Akimbo in 2007 upon completion of our 1 year contract. Akimbo went out of business in July of 2008. The company, had raised $16.2 million from venture-capital firms including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. New versions of Akimbo were delayed, and it decided to forego publicity and quietly made its $230 set-top box up available to consumers on Amazon.com (AMZN ) as well as on its own Web site. In July 2008 after numerous attempts to gain traction in the new VOD market space Akimbo closed its doors.
